Phonewell

Make the phone you live on work for you.

You spend hours on your phone every day, and most of what it can do stays hidden. Phonewell finds the powerful features already built in and sets them up with you, about a minute each, so your phone gets faster to use, safer, calmer and free of clutter.

It takes you to the exact screen, then checks.

Most phones hide their best features three or four menus deep, under names that change with every update. Phonewell knows where they are on your model and walks you there.

  1. It opens the right screen

One tap lands you on the settings page you need, not the top of Settings. You can see the whole path before you go.

  2. You flip the switch

Up to four short steps in plain words, using the labels your phone actually shows. Each card says what you'll notice and how to undo it.

  3. It checks the result

Where Android lets an app read the setting, Phonewell confirms it's on. Where it can't, it asks you, and never marks it done on its own.

Stop ads in almost every app

About 2 minutes

One setting points your phone at AdGuard's free filtering service, which blocks most ads and trackers in apps and browsers. Nothing to install, no account.

Where it is on a Samsung

  1. Settings
  2. Connections
  3. More connection settings
  4. Private DNS

What to do there

  1. Choose "Private DNS provider hostname".
  2. Enter dns.adguard-dns.com (Phonewell has already copied it for you).
  3. Tap "Save".

Phonewell read the setting: dns.adguard-dns.com

Checked: on

A checkup that says what it couldn't check.

Phone cleaner apps love a scary score. Phonewell's checkup reports only what it can actually read on your phone. If Android won't share something, it says so. There's no made-up health score: the number it shows is how many things you've set up.

  • OnRead from your phone and confirmed.
  • To doRead from your phone, and worth a minute. Tap it to set it up.
  • Couldn't checkAndroid doesn't let apps read this here, or you haven't given the access it needs.

Recipes: a few settings that belong together.

Some jobs take more than one switch. A recipe lines them up in order, so "make my phone theft-proof" becomes a short list you can finish over a coffee.

Makeovers: change how the phone looks and feels.

A makeover is a guided set of changes that go together: a wallpaper drawn for your screen size, a couple of widgets, icon shapes, a theme and the settings that make the look hold.

Tidy: the apps you never open, and what they weigh.

Tidy lists apps you haven't opened in a while, with how much space each one takes. One tap each opens Android's own uninstall dialog, so nothing goes without your say. Keep an app and it stops being suggested.

Tidy needs usage access, which is optional. Last-used dates, app sizes, unlocks and screen time are read on your phone and never uploaded.

The app list shown here is an example.

Power mode, in plain words.

Android lets an app change only a handful of settings by itself. For everything else, you have to tap the switch, which is why Phonewell normally takes you to the screen instead of doing it for you.

Power mode is the optional exception. It uses Shizuku, a free and open-source helper app, to give Phonewell one extra system permission on your phone. You set it up once, in about five minutes, and you can turn it off whenever you like.

Ad blocking in one tap

Phonewell sets Private DNS to AdGuard's free filtering service for you, and it stays on after a restart.

Preinstalled apps, switched off

Turn off the extras your phone came with, like Samsung Free or Xiaomi's ad service. They aren't deleted, and you can switch them back on from the same screen.

Quicker animations

Shorter animations make opening apps feel snappier. It doesn't change real performance, and Phonewell says so.

Everything Power mode does happens on your phone, and every change can be undone from the Power mode screen. It's part of Phonewell Plus.

Free to use. Pay once if you want everything.

No subscription, no trial that charges later, and no ads in either version. Phonewell offers Plus once, after you've set up a few things, and then leaves you alone.

Questions

Does Phonewell change settings by itself?

Mostly, no. It takes you to the exact settings screen, tells you what to tap, and then checks the result. Android only lets apps change a few settings directly. With the optional Power mode, Phonewell can switch some on itself, such as ad blocking.

Which phones does it work on?

Phonewell is built for Android, starting with Samsung Galaxy phones, then Google Pixel and Xiaomi. Other Android phones get the guides that apply to them. If a feature isn't on your phone, Phonewell says so instead of guessing.

Is Phonewell free?

Yes. The phone checkup, Tidy, the most useful guides, wallpapers and widgets are free, with no account. Phonewell Plus is a one-time payment of €7.99 that adds every guide, recipe and makeover style, plus Power mode. There is no subscription and nothing renews.

What does "couldn't check" mean in the checkup?

It means Android doesn't let apps read that setting on your phone, or you haven't given the access it needs. Phonewell shows "couldn't check" rather than guessing, and there's no made-up health score.

What is Power mode, and is it safe?

Power mode is optional. It uses Shizuku, a free and open-source helper app, to give Phonewell one extra system permission on your phone, so it can turn on ad blocking, shorten animations and switch off preinstalled apps you don't use. Apps are switched off, not deleted, and every change can be undone from the same screen.

What happens to my data?

It stays on your phone. There's no account, no ads and no analytics in the app. Usage access is optional and used only on the device: last-used dates, app sizes, unlocks and screen time are never uploaded. Purchases go through Google Play.

Is Phonewell available on iPhone?

No. Phonewell is an Android app, coming to Google Play first. Its guides are written for Android phones.

Start with one feature. It takes about a minute.

The step-by-step guides are free to read here, for Samsung, Pixel and Xiaomi. Browse the guides.
